Probation in NYC Criminal Cases
Probation is a a type of community supervision in which the person placed
on probation is supervised by a probation officer in the county where
the conviction occurred. This supervision may require the person placed
on probation to check in on a repeating basis, submit to drug testing, complete
therapy, stay arrest-free, and follow other terms.
Probation can last for 2 - 3 years for a
misdemeanor, or 3-5 years for a
felony. Probation violations frequently occur when the person on probation fails
to report, gets
arrested again, or is found to be abusing drugs or alcohol, or otherwise violates
the terms and conditions of their probation.
